In 1792, Alexander Hamilton established Paterson, New Jersey as America’s first planned industrial city, centered around the Great Falls of the Passaic River. The mills there created industries that changed the face of the newly formed United States and Paterson became the national hub of manufacturing.
I recently visited Great Falls National Historical Park. Two billion gallons of water a day fall 77 feet, they are the second largest waterfall in the nation east of the Mississippi River. As late winter has been mild in New Jersey, the falls were not frozen when I was there in early March as is sometimes the case.
For Sopranos fans, the Great Falls were featured in the pilot episode, as well as in the series sixth episode in which Mikey Palmice and another associate throw a drug dealer off the bridge and into the falls to his death. The bridge is currently closed pending replacement.
