Delighted to become a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution last year, I ordered some merch: a Christmas ornament, pin, scarf and baseball hat. At the time, I took a photo of them all to accompany a future story. Inspiration did not come; I removed it from my ideas list.
While in California on vacation, the wind was especially strong one day, so I turned the DAR hat I was wearing around to reduce the chance of it blowing off my head. I took a selfie and when I looked at the photo later, I realized the back of the hat says, “Celebrate America.”
In that instant I knew what to write about. I took the picture while at the base of an almost 600 foot volcanic plug rising from the deep blue Pacific Ocean like a rocket blasted from the center of the earth.
Just like my hat, I love to experience this nation by both standing in front of it and by also educating myself about what is behind us. This is how I celebrate my country. Yes, I am a Daughter of the American Revolution but first and foremost I am a proud and grateful American.
