Bones Of Contention

life
Posted on January 28, 2026 By Sister Rain

For the past three years, my husband and I have rented the same house outside of Seattle on the Puget Sound. The dates of our weeks there have spanned the months of October, November and December and each year, no matter what the calendar says, in the front yard of a home close to our rental, is a large Halloween decoration of a skeleton. Even with Santa’s big ride fast-approaching, the faux bony framework of a human, and one year, a flamingo, stand where a snowman and reindeer should.

It is quite possible that on several occasions I have rolled down my window as we pass the skeleton in order to yell “It’s (fill in the date)!”

I will fully admit that I leave our Christmas decorations up until late January and there have been cases where it has gone longer than that. But this is inside my home, our outside matches the date.

To make matters worse,  just like when you purchase a new car and you see the make and model everywhere all of a sudden, once we returned home the first year, my husband felt the need to tell me whenever we passed a similar “decoration” outside of the timeframe of ghosts and goblins.

Apparently in this day and age where everyone knows your business, it is no longer necessary to keep your skeletons in the closet.
