Les Motorcycles

I always wanted to get my motorcycle license and thought I had plenty of time to at least take a course to see if I really liked it. I spoke about it so often that my toddler nephew, now 20 years old, used to tell me, “Motorcycles are dangererous, Auntie Sister Rain!,” no doubt something he picked up from his mom or his grandmom (my mother-in-law). This dream roared away, however, with my vision loss.

While driving through Capitol Reef National Park in Utah, my husband suddenly stopped the car with no traffic signage instructing him to do so in sight. “What’s up?,” I asked.

“There’s a group of motorcycles and their riders in the middle of the road in front of us. I can’t tell if there was an accident or what’s going on,” he reported.

While I had not been able to see them in real-life, I did take a picture before everyone and their bikes moved to the side of the road a few minutes later. Though horse-powered instead of horses, the photo showed a herd that looked very much at home in the Wild, Wild West setting.

As we drove past the men and women and their steeds, I looked at the congregation as best as I could, feeling a touch of envy, even though I knew the rain we had driven through an hour ago had to have showered them as well, and that the temperature was 92 degrees and climbing.

Who knows what the future holds. For now,

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high and I was seeing
I dreamed I would learn how to ride
I dreamed that seeing was believing.
