SISTER RAIN NANTUCKET WEEK X2
8 / 10
Even though it was October, we had to go to the beach before we left Nantucket. On our last full day, we walked down the path next to our house, allowing the pounding surf of the south shore to guide us. The ocean was further away then it looked, all sand and difficult to traverse, but my trekking poles allowed me to walk it on my own. I had the backpack with our towels and other supplies, my husband carried our chairs.
After we settled in, a seagull landed nearby, walked in front of us, then around behind our little camp. My trekking poles were propped on the left arm of my chair. The gull moved close to their tips buried in the sand, proceeding to lay down right next to them. I couldn’t see it but Mister Rain told me the bird had its head around and was taking a nap, just like Piper does. I caught the movement of his feathers blowing in the wind. It was remarkable, making me emotional. He stayed there a long time before flying away.
Look, I am not going to tell you that that seagull was my dead mom. I am not going to say that. But I will say that I have not sat on a beach since she died, beach-sitting being our thing. For that wild bird to get that close to me, let alone feel comfortable enough to lay down and then SLEEP . . .
Mom always wanted to go to Nantucket.
