Coffee Bean There, Done That

life
Posted on November 19, 2025 By Sister Rain

It is not only fashion that seems to come back around, look at vinyl records and the Polaroid camera. Also, in our household, the drip coffee maker.

To provide a bit of background, I LOVE coffee. But as far back as I can remember, it has ben difficult to brew a good cup of coffee at home, whether it was our old Mr. Coffee we had retired years ago or the Keurigs we have used for the last 20. That style of coffee making was such a novelty at first, it was so convenient to be able to make one cup of coffee, especially when others in your family preferred a different kind than you. I never understood people who didn’t go the way of the Keurig.

In recent years, however, I have beome disillusioned with the quality of the coffee coming out of those enemies-of-the-environment K-cups. I LOVE coffee (I know, I already said that) and it was quite annoying that I couldn’t enjoy a good cup in my own home. I started calling it “swill” and not “coffee.”

I asked Mister Rain (not to be confused with Mister Coffee) to do some research and see what new coffee maker we should purchase without breaking the bank. Measurements were involved: would it fit under the kitchen cabinets?, how much counter space would it take up?

A selection was made, a few days later, the soft thud on our front porch’s wood floor signified that Christmas had come early. Accroutrements were needed: a new appliance slider, a new coffee grinder, and, oh, yeah, coffee. When all accessories were in place, my husband barista’ed the first carafe with our new arrival. As I made my way downstairs, at the fifth step from the top, the aroma of fresh brewed coffee greeted me, the medium roast already contributing to the process of my waking up and starting the day.

The new coffee maker has an app so that you can start a-brewin’ via your phone. This may seem like a luxury, but to someone who is visually impaired, it is a Godsend. Most new appliances and electronics no longer have buttons, which means we cannot use our sense of touch to count over to where we have memorized a control to be located. But I will admit, to a technology and coffee loving gal, this is nirvana.

Who knows if in 20 years a remodeled Keurig will be all the rage. There is also the possibility that we will be consuming all food and beverage via capsule some day, although I hope I am not here to see that. The ritual of a robust, hot cup of coffee in the morning is too precious to be George Jetson’ed.
