In an empty field in Tappan, New York, they have begun a touching tradition of honoring their own. Each flag represents individuals currently serving in our active-duty military, fallen servicemen and women, first responders, veterans, hometown heroes, frontline workers, 9/11 victims and COVID-19 victims. There were 16 rows of 16 flags. Seven foot tall, 3′ x 5′ flags are provided with a gold ball topper as well as a tag on each flag recognizing the individual or individuals. It was stunning.
A soft breeze blew the flags into action, causing them to slowly unfurl and wave. The movement struck me as iconic, is any other flag as proud and as faithful?
I had never been to Tappan prior to this day. The Field of Honor, located on the Manse Lawn, appeared to be in the middle of town, locals passed by in their cars as we took photographs of this tribute. As I listened to the traffic, I wondered if I had ever experienced anything as American as this before?
The Field Of Honor takes place from mid May through early July. It’s worth any drive you may have to make.
God bless America and God bless Tappan, New York.
