Our house was built in 1906 along with ten other identical dwellings spread across our block. We have a detached garage in the back, with an alley running behind it. Of the ten homes, ours is the only one with the original garage.
Needing to replace the garage floor, we made some interesting discoveries when we removed the old cement. There was a base for a post, most likely to tie up a horse back in the day. At one time, the garage would have also housed a carriage. We also found chicken footprints in the old concrete.
My husband and I have always said about our home, “If these walls could talk . . . ,” given that we are the twelfth stewards living here. But now we understand that our 119-year-old garage has stories to tell too.
