When I think of the song, “I Left My Heart In San Francisco,” I immediately picture the Golden Gate Bridge in my head. As I stood looking at the iconic symbol of this city by the bay it struck me that I cannot possibly be the only one. I am sure that many people fall in love with San Francisco upon first laying eyes on this bridge. It is not difficult to feel a connection, we have all seen this prominent landmark in photos, movies and TV shows. When you find yourself looking up at its immense size, the fantasy of this red structure becomes part of your reality. From this point forward whenever you see it in print or film, you will think, “I’ve been there.”
When my husband and I made our way from the parking lot to the area behind the Golden Gate Welcome Center, the fog, as equally famous as the bridge, began to roll in. After taking pictures, we returned to our car to make the trip across the span of the bridge to Sausalito. At the Battery Spenser Overlook we would be able to get not only a different view of the bridge but also see the city of San Francisco behind it.
Having just landed in California on this first day of an eight-day trip, it seemed as though we were being welcomed by the Golden Gate Bridge. As we drove across it, I released a long exhale. The stress and logistical challenges of getting here was over. Those 1.8 miles on that bridge transported me into vacation mode more than the 3,000 miles in the air had. Let the adventure begin, I thought, as I rolled down my window. The bay below me, the two red towers of the bridge towering in front of me I realized, It already has.
