SISTER RAIN NANTUCKET WEEK X2
9 / 10
Per the calendar it was time to leave Nantucket. My heart said something different. But we packed our bags, followed the instructions for closing up the rental house. We had time to kill until our 2:45 pm ferry so we drove around, finding ourselves near the ferry dock. I asked my husband if he wanted to try for standby for the noon ferry. He had checked that morning, it was sold out, but he pulled up to the gatehouse where a gentleman told him he had to go into the Steamship Authority office. I waited in the car.
People were running in and out of the building. Mister Rain texted me, “I’m #18, they are on #10. Have to wait to see if once they load the ferry there is room for us. I’m going to be in here awhile.” I checked the clock a bit later, it was 11:56 am. And then he came out. Running. My laid-back husband does not run. We were in! Or on, I should say!
We were the last vehicle to board, barely fitting, but the crew shut the door securely behind us. Hurrying out of the car, we raced up the stairs to go out on deck to watch our departure. My husband said, “There were two older ladies in the ferry office who were getting tickets for two days later. It is their once a year trip off the island. They were very excited.”
As we slowly pulled away from Nantucket, I could understand them not wanting to leave this magical place. I worked hard to exchange the sadness I was feeling for gratitude for the past week, a true dream come true.
Legend says that tossing a penny into the ocean as you pass Brant Point Lighthouse will ensure your return to Nantucket. As we threw our coins into the water, I decided I believed in legends. And legendary trips.
