Did you watch the Paris Parrotlympics? My husband and I did, we recorded them every night, viewing them from our DVR the following evening. We also sought out more thorough coverage on Peacock for those sports we are particularly fond of.
We, of course, loved cheering our boy on as he competed in many different areas – the high dive, weight lifting, gymnastics and swimming – but we are very excited about the upcoming Paris 2024 Summer Paralympic Games being held from August 28th – September 8th. They will air on Peacock.
I will fully admit that I knew nothing about the Paralympics, these games for the worldwide community of people with physical disabilities until I became visually impaired and they began to be covered by TV. I am in awe of these athletes and their stories. I do not always think of myself as disabled, I attribute that to living over 40 years fully sighted, but when I learn about someone’s experience as a result of an anatomical loss or malfunction, it is then that I think, “that’s me.”
If you have never been interested in the Paralympics, let me ask that you tune in for me. I cannot fully see them but I do not need to in order to understand the dedication, the resilience, the mental fortitude, the competitiveness, the courage of these woman and men who, like me, are challenged every day by the little things – electrical outlets, browsing in a store, getting on an escalator – then become, UNlike me, world-class athletes. It occurs to me that these elite competitors are not just at the top of the field in their sport but are also the very best of us.
I have asked you to watch the Paralympics for me but you would really be doing yourself a favor. Be warned, however, because from that point forward it will be difficult to make excuses not to get on your treadmill in your basement.
