What is it about preparing for a trip that causes us to go a little retail crazy? All of a sudden the socks and underwear – don’t even get me started on the bras – you have had for far longer than is civilized all need to be replaced. Not one of the ridiculous amount of tops in your closet will work for THIS destination. The potpourri of jackets that have weathered winter, spring, summer and fall like Sam Champions simply cannot accommodate the climate where you are going, despite it being the same as where you live. I am frugal by nature. I love to shop online, but I refuse to purchase anything not on sale or without a promo code. I would rather spend the money on the rental house for our vacation, yet the weeks leading up to travel require that UPS and the postal service hire more staff. The thump of a package landing by our front door is frequent. Why am I compelled to shop till I hop . . . on a plane???
Maybe it is because of the drilling into my head by my mom to wear nice underwear in case of an accident. Or perhaps it is simply a matter of a good time to purge and renew. It reminds me of when I worked in corporate America and how I would always kill myself trying to get things cleared up before I left for vacation.
Whatever the reason, it happens every time, as inevitable as my distaste for packing and a heavy suitcase. Getting ready for a recent week-long trip to the Pacific Northwest consisted of the purchase of, for both my husband and me, two new raincoats, new jeans, new yoga pants, makeup, new Seahawks track pants, a Seahawks sweatshirt, a long sleeve t-shirt for under a jersey, new bras, a crossbody purse, a bracelet (a gift for someone out there). Our underwear and socks were newly purchased earlier this year before going to Maine. I hope that’s okay, Mom.
