Needing a headshot for a few freelance articles I was writing, I looked for a place in our house with a blank wall that could be used as a backdrop. My husband was helping me, moving different height chairs and stools into our home office to position me properly against the only sliver of empty wall we could find. He took photo after photo after photo and none of them were a thumbs-up for me. Either I didn’t like the angle of my head, my smile or the large wrinkle in my shirt. Laid-back Mister Rain’s frustration continued to increase with the number of camera clicks, he felt many of the pictures were good.
Deciding to put an end to this madness, at least for the moment, I said, “Can you take a few horizontally? The one publication asked for that orientation.”
It was then that I knew I had pushed my husband to the brink, to the point of no return, when he asked:
“How do I take a photo horizontal?”
Immediately recognizing his tone, I replied to him as you would to someone who needs a little extra time to process information, slowly with a monotone voice. “You just turn the phone on its side.”
No words were spoken as he took more shots, handing my phone back to me every few pictures so I could take a look. “Thank you,” I finally said, not sure what we had accomplished as far as a photo but knowing the endeavor had successfully achieved frustration and impatience.
Enough time has passed that the “too soon” law has surpassed the statute of limitations. Yet I have not brought up the question he asked in the midst of Headshotgate. Although we both give each other a hard time in the name of humor, you always have to know the landscape of your marriage.
