The Inevitable Gap

Posted on September 30, 2025 By Sister Rain

As my husband and I walked to our car after an event, I heard a man behind us say to whomever he was with, “It sucks being like this but there are some good things that come from it. People are generally nicer, there’s handicap parking.”

“Is the person behind us blind?,” I asked Mister Rain. He turned to look. “No, but the gentleman is using a cane.”

I thought about what the man had said. It was interesting to hear someone else voice the sentiments I have had myself. It was just two sentences but I knew the thoughts he had behind them. It is sometimes difficult to reconcile the special treatment having a disability can warrant, I can easily feel bad about being able to board a plane early or park in a preferred area. But then I remind myself that these allowances are not to elevate me but to even the playing field that the lack of a physical function has caused.

As for the kindness of others? That is the most important piece, for it fills in the inevitable gap left between.
