Living with a visual impairment causes you to use your memory a lot more than you normally would. I have to remember that one particular shirt in my closet is green, another black. If I set something down, my iPhone for example, I have to remember where it is as I can’t scan the room to find it. If I go to the restroom at a restaurant I have to remember the turns and location of our table to get back to it.
Putting on a little makeup the other day, I dabbed dots of concealer under my eyes and eyebrows, as well as on a sunspot on my nose. I decided to take my face powder with me to put on in the car right before I arrived at the destination, so I moved onto adding a little tint and coverage to my eyebrows and a bit of mascara. I finished my hair and headed downstairs. As my husband passed me on his way to get the car keys, he stopped short. “You have makeup or something on your face,” he said. Thinking he was trying to be funny since I rarely wear makeup anymore, I replied, “Ha, ha.” He laughed too, followed by, “No, there’s makeup that shouldn’t be there.”
I went back upstairs to look at myself with one of my magnifying mirrors. At first I couldn’t figure out what he was talking about. Then I realized that I had not blended in any of the concealer. Unable to see it, I had forgotten.
I should write to the makeup company who makes the product to let them now they have done a great job. It sure concealed itself from me!
