Displayed in the window of the Lincoln Theater in Washington, DC since 2017 (not to be confused with that other theater), is a twice life-size, full-color, hyper-realistic head of President Abraham Lincoln.
It was created in 2013 by two-time Academy Award winning makeup artist Kazu (Kazuhiro) Tsuji, and is made of silicone rubber, polyester resin, and wood; Lincoln’s hair, beard, and eyebrows are constructed with human and yak hair.
Despite its size, it is eerily lifelike, well, eerily to me. As I wrote about in Unhidden Figures (click here), mannequins or anything of the like scare the bejeezus out of me. Knowing that this President Lincoln head was going to be a challenge for me, I told my husband, if its eyes or his big noggin moved, I would be out of there faster than you can say “four score and seven years ago.”
I was grateful, though, because I could see this bust so much better than if it had been normal size. As freaky as it was to me, it was important that I look and study Lincoln. I had just visited his oldest statue and his hitching post*, both of which were interesting. But it is a person’s face that will always tell the most tales.

If you plan to visit, be aware that church services are held at this theater on Sunday mornings and during this time, the window is covered.
