The last few years I have made a photo calendar to hang in our kitchen. Although I am unable to see it (I use the iOS calendar for everything), it is the resource my husband uses to see what we are up to.
The picture for each month is carefully mined by me from the images of the most recent year. It is not easy to choose just twelve. Mister Rain prefers to be surprised and stays out of the vetting process. I wrap the calendar, placing it under the tree for him to open on Christmas.
There is a thirteenth photo that will only be seen once and that is the cover. After the calendar is on the wall, the front picture will be overshadowed by the dozen images selected for each month. Yet it will be the first thing my husband sees once he removes the wrapping paper. That single view will set the tone for the year for the both of us.
This year I decided to use a photo of a plane taking off from LAX that Mister Rain took the day before we flew home after a spectacular week in California. The caption underneath reads: 2026 – 365 DAYS, UNLIMITED MILES.
As of this moment, the actual distances we will travel in the coming year are unknown, though planning has begun for a trip in the spring.
Then there are the proverbial miles, the everyday inches we will have to climb and those we will sail right through. While I am hoping for maximum calm waters and minimum large peaks to ascend, I have very little control over those journeys. I suppose this is the very definition of “adventure,” isn’t it?
Seatbacks are up. Tray tables have been stowed.
Happy New Year!
