Very good friends of mine, a married couple, attended a wedding one afternoon, a funeral the following morning.
I am sure that this happens more often than we think but when my friend told me that she and her husband were going to be present at these back-to-back events I was struck by the dichotomy of witnessing the start of a blessed union one day, the end of a loved one’s life the next. The newly betrothed and the gentleman who passed were not related by blood nor marriage, they were tied together by their separate relationships with my friends.
That is what it is all about, isn’t it? The connections we make with other human beings. We are all having the same crazy but beautiful existence: the births, the weddings, the birthdays, the holidays and the deaths. Obviously a death is not beautiful but the way we honor, mourn and remember certainly is.
“Til death do us part” are so much more than just some words we say at the altar. And in this case, they also sum up a 24 hour period in the life of my friends.
