Swanton Berry Farm

Swanton Berry Farm, located off the Pacific Caost Highway in Davenport, California is said to have out-of-this-world-good pies. Stopping there, I was a little disappointed to find that the pies they had that day all required refrigeration and I would not be near a refrigerator for quite a few hours.

Lucky for me, when the universe taketh away, it sometimes giveth. As my husband and I walked around the store, he told me there were freshly picked strawberries available for purchase. I love strawberries. He bought me a small basket and once I got back in the car, I brought them close to my face so that I could see them. Their sweet aroma filled the air. They looked as good as they smelled. There were no white spots as is often the case when you purchase strawberries from the grocery store nor was there any soft, mushy parts.

Under no circumstance could I have waited. I lifted one out of the container and bit into it. The strawberriest of flavors exploded in my mouth; in that moment I knew that I had been ruined. I would never be satisfied with strawberries from our local supermarket again. I proceeded to slowly, deliberately eat every one of the delectable fruit, savoring each bite.

You can pick your own strawberries at Swanton Berry Farm, many people were doing just that. Mister Rain commented, “Can you imagine? You pick your own strawberries and when you look up, there is the Pacific Ocean right across the road.”

I both sadly and gratefully picked up the last strawberry from the bottom of the basket. I looked up, able to see the blue water of the westernmost part of the country. Some moments in life are not only beautiful, they are delicious.
