One of the best things about travel is experiencing elements of everyday life that are completely foreign to you. As we drove from San Francisco to Yosemite, my husband kept me posted on what he was seeing. There were long stretches of enormous hills and resting atop them were what I think of as modern windmills. Their proper name: wind turbines. Rather than using electricity to make wind (like a fan) wind turbines use wind to make electricity. Wind turns the propeller-like blades of the turbines around a rotor, which spins a generator, which creates electricity.
At times they were everywhere, on both sides of the road, revolving so fast they looked like giant white lollipops.
Although I live not far from where Ben Franklin spent the majority of his life, passing his grave often during the course of my own, I had to travel to the other side of the country to learn about this method of producing electricity. I have been exposed to countless new and interesting things with the zipping close of my suitcase. These turbines are a perfect example of how travel is the wind that powers me.
