Built in 1723, the Three Tuns Tavern was already a half-century old at the start of the Revolutionary War. I could not find any definitive history of the tavern, in fact, most resources refer to its past as “sketchy” (meaning not thorough or detailed).
The information I did locate suggested that the tavern was most likely used or visited by British troops during their December 1776 and June 1778 occupations of Mount Holly, New Jersey, where the tavern is located. Also, the Court of Admiralty (maritime) met in Mount Holly on several occasions during the Revolutionary War, it is suspected that some of these sessions were held at the Three Tuns Tavern.
Known today as the Mill Street Hotel and Tavern, its current status is “sketchy,” as well. There are no hours of operation, menus or lodging information online. I had to search pretty hard to find a phone number. Finally uncovering two, I called both and neither were in operation. The tavern looks very well kept and was decorated for fall with mums and the adornment for all seasons: an American flag.
