As we traveled the length of the state of California by car, we were fortunate to see an abundance of stunning, interesting places and things, most of which were on the itinerary I had painstakingly prepared before our departure from home. However, there are always surprises when you travel, which, I believe, is one of the best aspects of exploring destinations we do not call home.
In California, we planned and accomplished seeing redwoods, Yosemite, Morro Rock, the Pacific Ocean, the rocky coast of Monterey and Big Sur. And then we discovered quite a few other unexpected natural features of the Golden State.
In Santa Cruz, we saw sea lions (click here for Santa Cruz, California), as well as seagulls much larger than the ones we are familiar with on the New Jersey Shore.
In Morro Bay, we got up close and personal with the gulls, one perched on our hotel room patio wall for quite some time.
Morro Bay also introduced us to the California ground squirrel, where signs told us that human food would harm them.
While having lunch in Big Sur, this interesting plant was right next to our table.
Also in Big Sur, my husband also spotted this unique looking bird that we were not familiar with.
It was extremely fascinating to Mister Rain to see cattle grazing in the enormous hills of Central California, roaming with no fencing in sight. A few miles south of Big Sur, he told me there were cows scattered in a large open field with no eclosure, below the fog that had rolled in, and adjacent to the Pacific Ocean.
Whether you are home or visiting a place you have never been before, there is always something new to see. Even the legally blind girl knows this to be true.
