Having visited the Hobbit House at The Brothers Greenhouses in Port Orchard, Washington for the first time in the fall of 2024 (click here for Such A Fine Sight – Part 4), I wanted to return on our most recent trip during the last week of November of 2025. I assumed that where it had been decorated for the fall the prior October, it would be all decked out for Christmas now.
The parking area my husband and I had previously used was covered in Christmas trees for sale this time around, so we parked a distance away. The ground was wet (it’s the Pacific Northwest in late November, after all) and I was using my trekking poles to make my way to the tiny house. A gentleman pushing a hand flatbed stopped to wish us a good morning. Although I couldn’t see his face, I suspected he was the same gentleman we had chatted with on our prior visit. He asked if we had come to see the Hobbit House, then, before I could say anything, he commented, “I think I spoke with you folks last year.”
“I thought the same,” I replied. “Did you serve in the navy?,” remembering he had mentioned that during our last conversation.
“I did,” he confirmed.
I also knew that he was from Long Island, New York but had decided to stay in the Pacific Northwest when his military career was over.
I absolutely love these moments. Though the parking lot was full of cars, we were the only three people around. A couple from Pennsylvania, wearing Seahawks hats and jackets, and a gentleman living and working in Washington state who must see many people in the course of twelve months, reconnecting after what was a brief encounter the year before. We talked for a few minutes, finally wishing each other happy holidays before we parted.
Arriving at the Hobbit House, at first I couldn’t see it and didn’t understand why Mister Rain had stopped. The little structure blended with its background in the cloudy, gray day. It was smaller than I recalled. I couldn’t tell if it had been decorated for Christmas but my husband shared that Santa, reindeer and a snowman were on the roof and around the house.
I enjoyed our return to the festive Hobbit House. Meeting up with the nursery associate again was also a fantastic way to start to the feel-good season. No hobbits were spotted, but there was a touch of a fairy-tale in the air.
