Empty With A Capitol DC

Posted on February 9, 2026 By Sister Rain

One of my recent trips to Washington, DC was during the government shutdown. It was eerie how empty the streets were.

I had experienced this once before, during COVID, both times there was a sense of finding oneself in a post-apocalyptic world where you are one of the few people who has survived.

Though unsettling, I will admit there was a feeling of peace in that the division and insanity currently infecting our country had no choice but to slow down . . . at least for a short time.

My first encounter with deserted streets in our nation’s capital was because of a modern plague.

And this time, there was a brief relief from one.
