As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of Independence, I was curious as to what was happening this week in 1776.

May 11, 1776

As much as I know about the American Revolution, I often focus on just the area from Boston to Philadelphia. When I am reminded of all that occurred on any given day, including the full breadth of the where, I have great difficulty in wrapping my head around its scope.

In the days leading up to May 11, 1776, American naval vessels in Pennsylvania engaged with British warships, causing significant damage to the Royal Navy vessels.

The fall of Fort Ticonderoga on May 10, 1776 would reinvigorate the campaign for independence over the following weeks.

On May 11, 1776, the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as the American Revolution intensified. Focusing on the war effort, there was heavy discussion regarding Native American affairs.

Benjamin Franklin was not in attendance, as he was departing Canada after a failed diplomatic mission.Though the Americans had successfully occupied Montreal, it was unsustainable; the region could not be secured.

Also on May 11, Patriots in Savannah, Georgia seized gunpowder from the Royal Magazine to arm themselves, strengthening the rebellion in the South.

Most people I know spend their Saturdays catching up after five days of work: cleaning the house, running errands, doing laundry, getting groceries. The next Saturday that has you on the run, think of May 11, 1776. That was a busy Saturday, too.
