It’s hard to leave Piper when I travel, even though I have a handful of exemplary sitters who take great care of him. No matter where I may be, the photos they send me of my little green guy each day help with the missing him.
My husband and I joke (it’s funny because it’s true) that Piper probably loves it when we go away, the ladies who stay with him dote on him, spoiling him even more than we do. I know, I didn’t think it was possible either.
Walking to my gate at the Philadelphia airport to fly out for the next seven days, I noticed a plane that looked like a bird. I was still feeling sad after having just said goodbye to Piper, so my affinity for all things bird was heightened. I thought, not for the first time, that I wish Piper could travel with us, but I know he is the happiest in his comfy, safe home.
The plane-bird would be the first of many birds or bird-adjacent things that I would come across while I was away. Of course I don’t need reminders to think of Piper. Even when we are apart, he is a part of me.
