I had just placed a flag and red, white and blue patriotic fairy lights in my new Dunkin Eagle Cup, as well as a flag, but had not yet moved it to its place on the sideboard. Piper was relaxing on my shoulder for awhile, then, reenergized by his little rest, continued on with his business of the day, every day: fun.
I had a small drum with a bell inside for him to play with. Once on the table he dragged the toy to the edge, positioning himself across from the new bird in the flock. His body language showed his displeasure.
It is no exaggeration to report that the staredown went on for over 30 minutes. Knowing Piper as I do, I suspect he was thinking two things: 1) he’s a little big for me to knock over, even if I charge him and 2) who the h*ll is this guy?!?!?!
Piper was the first to blink, mostly because he has real eyes and the cup doesn’t. Regardless, it was a confident, secure blink, the unhurried lid closing and reopening said it all: This house is big enough for the both of us, but there’s only one sheriff and that’s mommy. But she lets me think that it’s me.
