As my husband drove us home from a short trek to Washington, DC, all of a sudden he said, “100,000 miles.” The odometer had just rolled over. I thought about all the road tripping we have done in this car from our home in southeast Pennsyvlania: Maine, Nantucket, Pittsburgh, as well as multiple trips to the DC area, New York, Connecticut and New Jersey.
Then I had this thought: What if we all had odometers tracking how far we have come?
Of course, now our phones, watches and rings can track our steps and provde other data we didn’t know we needed. It would be interesting, though, to know, since birth, how many miles we have covered.
Then I considered the metaphorical miles, all the Points A to Points B we have logged. How many times have you offered support and encouragement to someone by saying, “You’ve come so far.” Perhaps that has been generously said to you.
But just how far is that???
That’s the statistic I want to know. Not how many times I roll over during the night or deviations in my body temperature.
For a car, each mile traveled brings it one step closer to needing to be replaced.
For a human, each mile traveled brings us one step closer to doing it again.
