Albert

life
Posted on January 7, 2026January 7, 2026 By Sister Rain

While I unpacked our luggage at our rental home in Port Orchard, Washington, my husband went to the grocery store for provisions for the week. When he returned, we began to unpack his purchases. Looking in one bag, he said, “I was walking out and there was a crane machine. I saw something in it but told myself to just keep walking. I got to the door and turned around, I had to try.”

He handed me a stuffed penguin.

My mom loved penguins and Mister Rain’s dad loved those crane machines, he was quite good at them. It was nice to think about the two of them combining heavenly forces to bring us this special souvenir.

We decided to name the penguin Albert, since he came from Albertson’s. I did wonder how I would get him home, the suitcases were already full on the way out to Washington. I ended up putting him in an empty packing cube and placing him inside my backpack, which I take on the plane with me.

For a week, Albert was able to experience the incredible water views of Puget Sound and the ferries passing by right along with my husband and me. He sat on the dining table as we had our Thanksgiving meal. I am not a girly girl and I am a woman of a certain age, but give me a stuffed animal with a sentiment attached and I will keep it on my dresser in my bedroom at home.

His name is Albert but there is a little of my mom and my dad-in-law in him. That makes him family, no matter how old I am.
