As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of Independence, I was curious as to what was happening this week in 1776.

April 17, 1776

New York has not yet declared for which side of independence it stands. Government officials and merchants are supplying the British ships in the harbor.

General George Washington, angered by these continued communications with the enemy, writes to the New York Committee of Safety on April 17, 1776, insisting that such contact should cease.

Following General Washington’s firm request, the New York Committee of Safety declared that such communication was “injurious to the Common Cause,” passing resolutions forbidding residents from contacting or supplying British ships in the harbor.

Can you imagine what General Washington could have done with texting and FaceTime?
