Big Sur, Big Bridge

travel
Posted on August 14, 2025 By Sister Rain

The stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway between the California towns of Carmel and Big Sur is one of the most stunning parts of our beautiful America. The coast here is what we all think of when we picture Monterey, when in fact this area is south of that city.

The spectacular cliffs climbed higher and higher as my husband drove us south. The extremely windy two-lane road prevents you from seeing what is coming in the other direction which would normally be a bad thing. Here, however, it is a necessary safety feature; if you were to take your eyes off the road to look at other cars while driving you just may find yourself no longer in an automobile but rather an airplane with no landing gear.

At one point fog rolled in, settling atop the mountain in front of us like white cotton candy.

To our immediate right was nothingness, in the distance: land, sand and the Pacific Ocean. The brilliant blue was fringed at the shoreline by white foam, the vast watery carpet meeting the horizon on its other side, occassionally flecked by white where a wave broke against a rock.

It is a view that only birds and God are usually privy to. How fortunate were we?

The Bixby Bridge
An iconic landmark, the Bixby Bridge is the longest concrete arch bridge in the state of California. Built in 1932 the bridge is 714 feet long, 218 feet above sea level and only 24 feet wide.

After driving over it, we stopped on the southern side to look at the bridge. Like the Big Sur area, the Bixby Bridge is constantly photographed and has appeared on postcards, in TV and print ads, as well as tourism campaigns. None of these, however, can truly convey the size of the bridge or its surroundings. They are both magnificent.

It felt as though I was standing at the border of the earth, that the sea and the sky before me concluded here. If this was indeed the case, the end of the world never looked so good.
