For Christmas last year, I gave my husband a Bird Buddy, a smart bird feeder with a built-in camera that captures photos and videos of visiting birds. It connects to an app on your phone to send you notifications and identify bird species. It provides a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with wild birds as they dine on the food you supply.

Although the Bird Buddy is a technological advancement in the common practice of feeding the birds in your area, some things never change, no matter how many frames per second are involved. What I am specifically referring to is, as he is known in our home, Mr. Squirrel.
On Day 1, after the Grand Opening festivities had been completed, it became evident that the Buddy we were seeing was not feathered but furried. I won’t go so far as to say Mr. Squirrel was a camera hog but he certainly was ready for his close-up at all times.

When your mild-mannered husband declares war on someone, it is cause for concern. Google searches, mumbling, trips out to the back yard, the garage, more mumbling, more Googling, resulted in a 5 lb. bag of spicy bird food being purchased and put into the Bird Buddy. Squirrels don’t like the heat, apparently, while the birds don’t mind it. I’ll be damned if Mister Rain didn’t win both the battle and the war.

Whenever Mister Rain has complained about the squirrels throughout our marriage, I would always say in response, “Squirrels are God’s creatures, too.” Grumbling was the common reply to that, but it must have sunk in. Although the Bird Buddy is now exclusively loaded with the spice, our other large bird feeder is always filled with regular food, so Mr. Squirrel remains well fed.
We have had many wonderful photos and videos of the birds who visit our Bird Buddy diner, it has been very interesting to learn what types of birds find their way to us. And now where once there was a fluffy tail in our camera footage, there are wings, beaks and feathers. Our bird buddies, indeed.
