DC Is A Marvel At Night

In the darkness . . .

Washington Monument
Arriving into Washington, DC as night fell, the Washington Monument welcomed my husband and me back. The memorial’s night lighting brought the 550-foot obelisk to life in the slowly darkening sky.

No offense to Abe or Tom, but I think this particular monument is the city’s most iconic. For once I was glad when the rush hour traffic caused our continual stoppage at red light after red light. It allowed me to take in the outline of this giant monolith honoring the General, the President, the Legend.

Crystal City Sports Pub
Since we were in the DC area to attend a Seahawks – Commanders game, that meant that it was football season. There is a sports bar in Arlington, Virginia, Crystal City Sports Pub, that we love to go to. Its multiple TVs show every game being played, and I mean EVERY game, and the food is great. They even serve breakfast, and if you, like me, thought a sports pub could not possibly do breakfast right, you are wrong.

Mister Rain took a  photo from the parking lot across the street; when I looked at it later, it felt like home, as all places you frequent do.

Jefferson Memorial
The following evening on the way back to our hotel after dinner, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial caught my attention out the passenger window. Able to discern its dome, I confirmed with my husband that it was indeed the Jefferson Memorial. Before he could reply, I was snapping photos. Once back in our room, I viewed the pictures. Since blue is the only color I really see, the incredibly striking sky was mesmerizing. This photo is not doctored or edited. I think it is remarkable.

Eleven Floors Up
Seeing the monuments from above, covered in white after an overnight snowfall, as I wrote about in The Snow Below (click here), our Nation’s Capital is equally compelling at night. With homes in the forefront, the city’s lights surround its structures like twinkling stars, and the memorials seem to glow from within.

Northwest Stadium
Attending any live sporting event is exciting, but there is an extra thrill when it takes place in the evening. The Seahawks versus Commanders matchup was a Sunday Night Football game, with kickoff at 8:00 pm. Although we were not rooting for the home team, the festivities prior to the coin toss got the crowd hyped up, including us. Our Seahawks put on a show, beating the Commanders 38-14. But the show that Northwest Stadium put on wasn’t half bad either.

. . we see something new.
