Dinosaurs, Gorillas And Oz. Oh, My!

Country Junction in Lehighton, Pennsylvania calls itself “The World’s Largest General Store” and after experiencing it for myself, I cannot dispute the claim. Selling items ranging from flowers to jewelry to furniture to pet supplies to fudge to prepared food to hardware equipment to building materials, well, oh, my indeed.

The original store was destroyed by a fire in 2006. They rebuilt and reopened in 2010. The fire was the only thing I knew of this place so every corner I turned offered a surprise, starting with a talking tree with whom Mister Rain had a conversation. I am sure it was about football. Or March Madness.

Following the Yellow Brick Road, at various points throughout the store we came across the Scarecrow, Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and Toto, too. Glinda was there as well, complete with bubbles floating through the air.

There were dinosaurs.

And a gorilla.

A little overwhelmed by all the “decor” and the multitude of products for purchase, we did buy bird food for our outside feathered friends. While standing in line, I overheard the two women behind me talking. “How long have we been here?,” the one asked the other. “I don’t know. We got here around 1:15. What time is it now?,” she replied. Her friend took out her phone. “It’s 3 o’clock. We have been here almost two hours!”

I had only been there for a short period by comparison. But Country Junction will be something I will remember for a long time.
