Driving around a residential area of downtown Washington, DC, my husband noticed a business called Dog Daze Social Club. Within its fenced in space was a dog park with plenty of room for pups to run around and play. Adirondack chairs lined the one side of the dog garden, while picnic tables were arranged on the opposite side interior length of the fence.
Outside the enclosed park is Dog Daze’s indoor restaurant and bar, offering salads, sandwiches and pizza. Coffee, smoothies and ice cream are on the menu too. Bar selections include classic and craft beers, as well as cocktails. The eatery is only for humans, but your dog is welcome to enjoy the on-leash patio. There is also a place inside the dog garden where you can purchase items and eat, drink and be furry at one of the picnic tables. Atop this outbuilding are several TVs. It seems they have thought of everything.
As you know, Mister Rain and I are bird people, though we love all animals. How anyone doesn’t fall in love with every dog they meet is beyond me. And so when my husband described Dog Daze Social Club to me after he spotted it, we pulled over to get a better look. The concept and execution of the business was genius, and, because of that, for a fleeting moment, I pictured opening something comparable at home.
Travel does that, doesn’t it? It exposes you to the pieces that make up a life different than your own. Even though I live in the suburbs and not the city, have a bird and not a dog, I could imagine myself walking the few blocks from my townhouse on a Saturday afternoon with my excited pooch leading me to their favorite place, where we both would, as it says on the side of one of the buildings, unleash our fun.
