Feeding Piper’s Right To Choose

This is the Piper story of the week so you may be wondering, Where is Piper?

We needed a new bird feeder for our backyard, the existing one has been in use for many, many years. I am tempted to say we got it right after we were married but it is unlikely that it would have lasted that long in the Pennsylvania weather.

The post it sits atop is deep in the ground, I’m guessing if you visit the Great Wall of China you will see it poking out of the clouds. In order to not have to remove that pole my husband searched online for a feeder that would fit the dimensions of the current post. He found one at one of our favorite stores in Lancaster, Peaceful Valley Furniture, calling to confirm availability of our required size. We have previously purchased garden items from this shop, we are very impressed with their quality and longevity.

We made the 90-minute drive to Lancaster, returning home with the new bird feeder. The Sister Rain in me immediately thought that a picture of Piper sitting inside it before it was installed outside would be a fun story.

Setting the bird gazebo on the table where Piper hangs out a good portion of the day, he immediately ran over to the feeder, even resting his one foot on the outside border. And then he backed up, his initial interest replaced with caution. No amount of encouragement or cajoling was successful in getting him to approach again. He wasn’t having it, moving even further away. Thinking for the umpteenth time that I am smarter than Piper – HA! – I inserted his favorite toys of late, his Barrel of Monkeys and his sneaker, inside the feeder. Making a show of putting them inside the structure, he watched from a distance. I left the feeder on the table, walking away to give him a chance to decide on his own. He never went near it again.

At a time in my life when I should have learned this lesson a long time ago, Piper demonstrated the behavior to me: It’s okay to say “no.”
