Up until my 40s, the “#” symbol represented the word “number.” Now, it is best known as a hashtag.
I, of course, was aware of hashtags, but I did not understand them as I do now. When I decided to relaunch Sister Rain almost two years ago, I spent the six months while the site was being redesigned learning how to use social media to promote the website. A large part of that education was in the art of the hashtag.
There is a hashtag for everything. If not, you can create one yourself at any time. There is, at least for now, no hashtag police. You are free to hash your own tags at will. They can be fun but what I came to find out is that they serve an important purpose. People search on hashtags to find information on subjects that interest them which can lead them to your website or your social media accounts. There is a methodology to the process, a proven science. You want to use at least 15-20 hashtags each time, mixing it up to include a few that are niche-specific to your target audience or subject, then several in the moderate range (50,000 – 300,000 followers) with a few of your own brand such as #sisterrain or #alittlesightalotofheart.
At a time when everything is complicated, I find it interesting that we have created clear, concise labeling, a simple way to lead you where you want to go when the offerings for every topic are infinite. In a world where the possibilities are endless, I hope we all #findwhatwearelookingfor.
