I have had the same set of luggage for a very long time. My in-laws gave it to me for my birthday in 2011, the year before my vision loss. I was traveling constantly then for work, but its new wheels had just started turning when I lost my sight. My career ended and the red suitcases were packed away.
After five years, I dusted myself off along with my luggage and we haven’t looked back since. There have been frequent road trips and flights. As I learned that I could still love travel even though I cannot see very well, I grew mentally and emotionally stronger, while, unfortunately, my luggage began to show signs of wear. Knowing I was temping fate, I kept using the suitcases, crossing my fingers that they would not completely fall apart mid-trip. Even a blind girl can picture her undies all over the tarmac.
After doing my research, I chose a 3-piece set in blue by American Tourister, the same brand as the old set. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Once it arrived, I carefully inspected all three bags, finding the zippers, wheels, handles and space ready for takeoff.
I was sad to say goodbye to the luggage that logged so many miles with the old me, then waited patiently for the new me to explore again. And, oh, my world, did we explore!
Now it is time for the new suitcases to continue on where the old set left off, transporting my this and that to wherever I may roam.
Thank you, old luggage, and welcome to the new. It’s out with the red and in with the blue.
