It Served Us Well

When I moved into my apartment at the age of 23, my mom gave me some dishes she never used. Over time I added Tuppperware plates and bowls, in those days being invited to a Tupperware Party was as common as receiving an LOL today. For my wedding shower I was gifted a Cornelle set that included dinner and salad plates, cereal bowls and mugs. Those dishes became our “good” set when we had guests. My husband and I continued to use the plates mom had given me daily for the past 30+ years.

We have been down to two of her dinner plates for several years, one had  a notch in it, the other a crack running through the middle. While washing one in the sink a few weeks ago, it slipped from my hand and shattered on the wood floor. Boy, was I bummed.

Curious, I looked online. My mom had received the set when she was married in the 1950s and something told me they were popular at the time. Sure enough, people are selling the same plates, most for ridiculous amounts of money such as $50 a dinner plate!

If they weren’t so expensive, I would consider buying a few pieces. We now use our previously deemed “good” dishes everyday, we did eventually get a large piece set of “really good” tableware for when people come over, as we began to entertain more people and more often.

The one lone large plate and its matching salad plates and sides bowls are still in the kitchen cabinet. I thought about throwing it away but I like having it there for as long as it will stay. It has served two generations well. And now I understand that all good plates have a shelf life.
