Miles High Marriage

life
Posted on June 4, 2025 By Sister Rain

My husband and I have been faced with extremely difficult times in the 30+ years that we have been married including each of us suffering an extremely serious health issue, the death of our parents (two of which were sudden and tragic), money troubles, the loss of our beloved first bird, Cato.

We recently road tripped though California, covering 1,300 miles. The above mentioned challenges pale in comparison to this kind of time spent in a rental car. Especially when you are unable to drive and must ride shotgun. Even more so when you are legally blind and tasked with the navigation portion of the excursion.

As I write this story, only nine days have passed since we returned home. Already the trip has begun to to fade. Thank goodness for the pictures we took, they will forever remind us of a fantastic week spent in the Golden State. What is still foremost in my mind, though, is how well Mister Rain and I worked in tandem, how tempers did not flare, no kicking, screaming or biting occurred. I give my husband a lot of credit, he was behind the wheel for many hours each day in all kinds of terrain and traffic situations from windy, switchbacked roads so high in elevation that we feared nose bleeds to infamous bumper-to-bumper Los Angeles conditions. The fact that we traveled so many miles without incident should not be taken for granted. We arrived home safe and sound, our marriage intact.

We have had many adventures since meeting; our first was a trip from home outside of Philadelphia to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where my then boyfriend proposed to me after 11 months of dating. We squabbled more on that trip than we did on this one; you would think it would be the other way around. Those two crazy kids didn’t know what struggles are which I kind of love about them. I also love who we are all these years later. I have not a clue as to what the universe has in store for us. What I do know is that together we’ll go the distance.
