Paying My Dues . . . 20 Years Later

Posted on November 5, 2010 By Sister Rain

I read a book recently, fiction, about Hollywood. It got me to thinking how actors and actresses stereotypically work as waiters and waitresses, respectively, until they get their “big break”. It used to be that acting was one of the hardest professions to break into.

Until now.

Now, ANY profession is difficult to break into, even if you’ve been in that profession for years. People with MBA’s are taking clerical positions. People who should be the ones with the most seniority in an organization are being brought into entry-level positions.

I have always said I could never be a waitress. My mouth and temper are too dirty and bad, respectively.

But waiting for my “big break”, 20+ years into my career, I could very well be asking “Do you want fries with that?”.
