Every Columbus Day weekend, the bird store where we purchase Piper’s food and toys has a 30% off everything sale, the event is called Parrot Palooza. Although we had stocked up on both in July, we made the drive to Bird Paradise in Burlington, New Jersey to at least buy food at this great price. We did end up getting a few new toys that we saw, always on the lookout for new items to enrich Piper’s life.
As I pushed the shopping cart to the checkout counter, my husband asked, “What do you think? $300?” I was not expecting the total to be that much. “Do you mean before the discount?,” I clarified. That was not what he meant.
I don’t say this often and putting it in print is a definite no-no, but Mister Rain was right. The bill came to $275 after the 30% had been applied. Sure, we had saved over $100, but how is it possible that a 100-gram parrot can cause such expense?
Turns out it’s not really a mystery. He flew into our hearts the moment he bit us for the first time on the day we met at A Helping Wing Parrot Rescue & Sanctuary. It was all uphill, in the very best way, from there. While it is true that Piper has played a part in our bank account going in the opposite direction, Piper has been the greatest ROI of our lives.
