I bought a Funko figure of Blitz, the Seahawks’ mascot, for Piper, although I had an offsides feeling it would result in a too-many-birds-in-the-house penalty and I would be ejected from the game.
I did it anyway.
No amount of holding or quiet huddles won Piper over. There was, with no delay of game, both roughing and intentional grounding of Blitz. I had hoped to get a cute picture of Piper and Blitz together, knowing that if I had any chance of doing so, it would end zone with Blitz the first down, lying on his back after being tackled by Piper.
The field goal in all of this was fun, and I certainly don’t want to traumatize Piper with things that upset him. And so I did not even attempt the photoshoot.
One morning, though, Piper decided to take a bath in his water bowl after my husband put fresh refrigerated water in it and Mister Rain called an audible. In a quarterback sneak, he put Blitz in the bowl while Piper perched on its side at the line of scrimmage. I don’t know who was more surprised, Blitz, who found himself in a cold plunge, or Piper, who likes to do his laps alone.
Piper’s shock kept him from blitzing Blitz, he just kept looking at this guy in his water bowl.
There was, however, no mistaking the fact that even though we are fervent Seahawks’ fans, there is one play that will not be reviewed:
There is only bird representing the team that is our family.
And his name is Piper.
