Despite having been on the great Mississippi via a cruise ship as well as having viewed the mighty Colorado River from a helicopter high above the Grand Canyon, I have come to realize that I have been a snob when it comes to rivers. Give me an ocean or lake and I am all in. A river? Not so much.
That is, until I found myself up close and personal with the Merced River in California. From the moment I heard it through the open car windows as we neared Yosemite National Park, I was captivated. Running fast and loud due to winter’s snow melt, we repeatedly met throughout the park.
Upon checking into our hotel room right outside Yosemite, I was delighted to find that we were actually on the Merced River. Leaving the balcony door open, its roaring sound was just mild enough to lull us to sleep. When I woke up in the morning, my appreciation for rivers had grown exponentially. Something this powerful cannot be denied. The Merced River taught this woman who was snooty that rivers are quite a thing of beauty.
