It had been two months since Santa was here
There were no more gifts yet to buy
So imagine the shock my husband felt
Did he let out a curse or a sigh?
For when he’d left home a few hours before
The porch held only trash that was canned
The snow and the ice that was in in our backyard
Made their storage out front a demand.
He knew what they were, what I’d ordered from Kohl’s
Still the mountain had him shaking his head
Even though the only things delivered
Were new pillows to use on our bed.
It just happened to be Valentine’s Day
In the car he had twelve of a flower
What he found from me on this day of love
Was a very tall cardboard box tower.
At this stage of life and all the years married
Our relationship, it does run deep
But now at our age, the most romantic gesture
Is getting a decent night’s sleep.
