Wear And Chair

Things wear out. It is a fact. Talk to my knees if you require confirmation. Sometimes, though, the weardown process gets a little help.

In 2019 I bought a small light blue recliner for $100 from Amazon to be positioned in our living room close to the TV, its purpose to assist me in seeing the television a little better.

Because I sit in the chair every evening, Piper does too. Often he is on me but sometimes he perches directly on the arm of the recliner or on the top of the back of it. Even though I think birds get a bad rap in regard to them being messy and “pooping everywhere,” the truth is, like any feathered or furry soul, there will be some necessary extra clean-up in your routine.

When Piper is not hanging out in or on his mansion and is instead with my husband or me, we both are able to tell when Piper is going to do his business so we catch it in a tissue, if we are quick enough. If there is no time for a tissue I am not adverse, at all, to using my hand. Or, I hold my arm out with Piper on it or my hand so that it lands on our wood floor to be cleaned up right away. Despite our best efforts there are times when it lands on the furniture.

No mater where it ends up, the good news is that Piper is a little guy, therefore, everything coming out of him is as well.

In the past six years my TV recliner’s arms have been the recipient of quite a few of Piper’s gifts. We had reached the point where no amount of cleaning can remove the marks, plus this piece of furniture had done enough for us. It was time to replace the chair. It arrived and as with anything “just driven off the lot,” the goal is to keep it pristine for as long as possible. Inevitably, like a door ding on your new car, use is going to include unintentional abuse. Not going full plastic slipcovers, we did get a dish towel to keep by the recliner for when Piper is sitting with either myself or Mister Rain.

The new darker blue chair has an important job, it makes watching TV somewhat possible for me. Its biggest responsibility, however, is to be worn down by my husband’s mornings sitting with Piper and my own evenings with him. For us, a new recliner every six years is a small price to pay for time spent with Piper.
