The Yosemite Valley Chapel was built in 1879 at a cost of between three and four thousand dollars. The wood chapel was originally located in another part of Yosemite National Park, it was moved to its present location in 1901. Restored in 1965 after a flood the year before, it was again damaged in the 1997 Yosemite Valley floods and required repair.
Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in December 1973, the interdenominational Yosemite Valley Chapel seats about 250 people
Held in the embrace of a verdant Yosemite Valley, nestled in the nook of tall, protective trees, amidst the ancient, massive rock formations, both the setting and this church are magical. It was a surprise to find such a peaceful sanctuary in a place visited by over 3.5 million people annually. It didn’t take me long, though, to understand that in a location filled with giant miracles, the tiny Yosemite Valley Chapel is appropriately and divinely right at home.
