One Giant Step For Chocolate

vision
Posted on May 6, 2025 By Sister Rain

Stopping at a candy store I had read about online, Damask Candies in Swedesboro, New Jersey, my husband and I selected a few chocolate treats to take home. The smell inside the shop was divine, the greatest advertising campaign there ever was.

Given that it was a few weeks before Easter, business was booming. Telling Mister Rain what I wanted, I said I would go outside to wait to free up space in the small retail area. There was a large step down from the door and is often my practice, I found the door molding with my hand, testing it for sturdiness, planning to grip that as I took one giant step for chocolate. But then I noticed a white handle to the right of the door inside, so I used that instead. Safely down on the sidewalk, I turned to close the door, now seeing an identical handle outside to the left of the door that I had missed on my way in.

I can’t tell you what a help these handles are for someone with mobility concerns. In addition to my visual impairment, I am only 5’ 2” and I don’t know if you have noticed, but steps and curbs are getting higher. Having no depth perception, there is no way to guage how far the drop is. Even when I use my white cane, it is still difficult to comprehend exactly how far it is to the touch down.

Thank you, Damask Candies! Your chocolates are delicious. But it is your thoughtfulness that I savored even more.
