We are all familiar with the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the White House and the Capital. There is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial with its two black granite walls engraved with the names of those service members who died or remain missing as a result of their service in the Vietnam War. The World War II Memorial, made of 56 granite pillars, decorated with bronze wreaths, honors those who served in this war.
One of the more unknown monuments is the Air Force Memorial. Open in October 2006, it is located in Arlington, Virginia near The Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery.
There are three stainless steel curved spires replicating contrails or vapor trails produced by aircraft engine exhaust. Its highest spire is 270 feet tall, the base approximately 132 feet high, the entire structure stands 402 feet tall.
I learned of the Air Force Memorial several years ago; now when I visit the Washington, DC area I have my husband look for it and point it out to me. We stay at a hotel when we are in town that has a terrific view of it. It is uniquely beautiful, a work of art that honors the service of the personnel of the United States Air Force.
