2012 was the most significant year of my life as I would lose my mom and my vision within five months of each other. Therefore, 2017 brings many five-year markers and I have been documenting them here as they arrive. Today is not only the fifth anniversary of the beginning of the greatest part of 2012 but a celebration of one of the best things I ever did.
Five years ago this afternoon I logged on to petfinder.com and found Piper, an orange-fronted conure. There would be soul-searching, discussions with my husband and an extensive process put in place by the rescue he was at, but the universe brought us together the moment his picture and bio appeared on-screen.
Piper is on my shoulder as I write this and I just took this shot. 2012 was the year my life changed in the opening of the eyes as I opened mine one morning to complete darkness and the last breath my mom took. But it also changed with the click of a mouse and a photo of a bird.
